Car Insurance after divorce

Postby intothewind » Wed May 02, 2012 8:27 pm

Next Wednesday my STBX and I have our court date to finalize our divorce. The ex is planning on renting a UHaul truck and moving the following Saturday.

My question relates to car insurance - I assume as of the day of our divorce she is officially off our car insurance policy, no? If she has an accident with the truck, she probably wont be covered. UHaul won't let her take out their $1,000,000 liability coverage since she's unemployed.

I don't even know if they'll rent her a truck since she doesn't have a credit card.

I just want to get her out of the house. Once she's gone its all on her...

She will be on the policy until you remove her.

If she gets the rental and has an accident, who cares. Not your problem anymore.

If she has an accident, I would assume she would be responsible for the deductible. I'll have to check with my insurance agent.

I've recommended to her to get a short-term auto policy for a couple weeks. All I want if for her to get her stuff packed, get on the road and out of my house without anything to come back to bite me.

After that I could care less....

Your policy...your problem. Get her off your insurance policy before the ink dries on divorce day.

Regardless of what your insurance agent tells you...as the policy holder...YOU are on the hook to cover the deductible for any claim that occurs on your policy. Could she be a stand up gal and pay the deductible if she had an accident? Sure. Is she going to do that? I wouldn't bank on it.

Make sure that your lawyer has it in the divorce decree that she must carry her own automobile liability policy. If that happens...it's in there (officially) and you've told her to get a policy. If she fails to do so and gets into an accident...that sucks to be her.

Believe me...I'm sitting her crossing my fingers that my NJ doesn't do something stupid behind the wheel (joint policy) before I can get her *** off the policy.

The same goes for my employer provided health insurance. If she wants to be a real a$$h01e...she can run out and see a bunch of specialists...pay the minimum co-pay on the day of...and leave me whatever charges come along later (i.e. $150 MRI, etc.).

Quit worrying about her. Lucky basterd only a week more. Why do you even have a joint policy still? Go get your own policy and remove yourself from the joint one you have. Then it is not your problem in any way at all. Don't even tell her you did it. She is a stranger now, what business does she have in your affairs?

Being insured on a moving truck for a short distance move really should be the least of your worries. You are going to be financially connected to your X until your kids are 18 or older.

Chill out.

I get the impression that there are either no kids in the picture or no kids "of the marriage." In which case (like my situation), the financial implications of your STBX's possible actions are the biggest worry.

Worrying about your ex wife getting in a wreck on a particular day and worrying about how that wreck could possibly impact you, is hand wringing at its finest.

I took my STBX off our insurance before I even filed.
