Free Credit Reports

Unread postby Trevor » Sat Mar 31, 2012 10:34 am

To monitor your credit, you are allowed one free credit report per year from each of the big three Credit Bureaus.

Calendar your requests such that you order Equifax on January 1, Experian on May 1, and TransUnion on September 1 (or whichever order or month you choose).

This way, every 4 months you get a review of your credit. True, they are not all the same, but spacing out over the year these reviews is good.

You are also entitled to a free credit report if you are denied credit based on the contents of one of them, or if you are unemployed. The big 3 are important, but don't forget there are others. Chexsystems and EWS report bank account data. There are even specialty ones that focus on everything from car insurance to payday loans.

Because of their security breach, Target is offering free credit monitoring service for the next year if you sign up by April 23rd if you've shopped in their store.

Also, due to a recent breach at Equifax, you can only obtain your credit report from them by filling in a form and mailing it to them. They have disabled the online get-yer-free-credit-report capability.

I don't know about you, but that gives me great confidence in the credit bureau's security in preventing abuse of their data to commit identity fraud. Not.

Also, having a Discover card provides you with your FICO credit score every month to alert you if it changes unexpectedly.

Not only that - but now a app called creditkarma.com gives you your free credit score AND gives you the highlights of your report.

As I recently discovered, the credit karma score has no relation to FICO. That doesn't mean it's not useful, just be ready for a surprise when you pull your actual credit score.

Also Karma just added another agency to the mix, but they changed the credit score model. some will see a significant reduction in there scores. Mine dropped nearly 150 pts.

What are most loan companies using for score? FICO, or this other 3.0 model?

I use Karma as a gauge. My experience has been that Karma was always lower than actual.

My mortgage broker laughed at the Vantage 3.0 score. Said to forget about it.

Reading the CK forums, most seemed to complain that the new scoring system showed their score as significantly less that their true FICO score. My CK Vantage score was about 35 points higher than FICO.

There is no correlation between the scores.

That's whats so messed up. Now you have to shop loans by the way they score or run the risk o f paying a higher % or losing all together. Hate Credit scores.
