Possible mold in X house

Unread postby Imout » Thu Jan 26, 2017 10:11 pm

I've been divorced for a few months now. She has moved into a house where I believe mold might be an issue. When I've been there picking up/dropping off it smells like an old moldy house. I know for sure it was a paint over and move in. When I have them, I can smell a musty smell in their backpacks. Almost as if you can imagine a person who smokes in their house. Not overwhelming but it's present. She claims no mold. I told her I would even pay for a mold test....same answer ..no mold. What options do I have?

There are many many types of mold, smell alone does not indicate it is the bad kind.

What would you be looking for with your children as an indication that the mold is an issue?

I look this past weekend and one of my girls was sick and today my other has runny nose/cough. This is ongoing, but I know kids get sick with runny noses. All I'm asking for is just a mold test to assure myself there is not black mold. This house was empty foreclosure on a lake in Florida. Paint and go.

It's not your house. Can you handle that idea?

Yes I can. I was just hoping to protect my girls. I am concerned. My friend who is a licensed real estate appraiser 17yrs (not inspector I know) picked his girl up over there after a sleepover and his words were "holy mold". He won't allow his girls over there anymore. I'm just trying to protect them.

Just as a concerned father, I was wanting and willing to pay for a mold test to ensure my girls are safe.

Then what?

Are you willing to pay for another place to live while the mold is cleaned up?
Are you willing to pay for the clean-up itself - all new drywall and such?

That's why I'm seeking advice. Would I be responsible for all of that if they did find black mold in her house. I would be willing to spend my own money to protect my kids. I'm in a tough spot. I don't have beef with her, just the safety of my children.
