Depending upon individual circumstance, some jurisdictions reserve authority to not recognize certain marriages. If such is the case, annulment may be possible. Talk to your attorney. - Will do.

If they're unable to support themselves, 15 yrs is how long you'll hafta support the person(s) you sponsor. - But have heard the process will take that long too. It won't happen overnight and it's her impression it would.

Could it be radiation poisoning?? - Do not think so.
Did she live anywhere near, or downwind of Chernobyl?? Not only is radiation taken up in the food chain, it remains in the soil for a very long time - half-life is 10K yrs. - She lived, probably, 400 miles from there. Her comment to me is Doctor's lie and do absolutely nothing for her and self medication is her only real solution.

if you were never married in the US, why would you need to file a divorce in the US? What concerns do you have if she thinks you are still married but only in her country?

You don't seem to sure... Only a US Citizen (You) can sponsor their wife or fiancé for a greencard. Your biggest exposure is she gets a green card out of this and your on the hook for some financial support. If your not a 100% sure I would call USCIS.

+1.....from what I've heard, something on the order of 15 yrs worth of federal alimony.

OP, research INS forms: I-539; and I-864, Affidavit of Support.

Marriage in another country is valid in the United States.
If you can't be a good example, you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Op,
I have a few friends who fell victim to these scams:

1. Woman agrees to civil marriage
2. Woman promises to come to US soon
3. Shite keeps happening to her that requires money, dental work, health issues, cat needs therapy, dog needs hair implants,
4. Every turn she will be asking for $$$

Sham marriage - you can revoke her GC based on the criteria of sham marriage. Keep joint account, live in the same address and so on.

Whatever do you do, this is not any less stressful for you than a nj spouse sitting at home. So talk to your friend/family/priest, get it off the chest bro.
