Is car insurance part of child support?

Unread postby dadsdivorce » Tue Apr 12, 2005 11:36 am

If my husband pays child suppport in the state of NC and the child needs
car insurance in order to drive, isn't the car insurance an expense that
should come out of the child support he gives her mother?

I cannot answer your question specifically to the laws of NC as I am not licensed in that State.

Generally child support pays for public education, clothing (but no sports specific clothing such as soccer cleats), shelter, routine medical (over the counter) and food. However, most jurisdictions do not define what child support covers exactly. For example I would assume that in today’s day and age electricity, heating and cooling are included in child support. I would say that cable television is not included in most child support calculations. What about internet? That is an open question.

To return to your question, generally I believe that car insurance would be an expense outside of child support and is not something that is included in the monthly child support.
