If the phone has a SIMM card, you can try ordering a SIMM card reader online. They cost about $5. I recovered several messages from my son's phone where NJ was coaching him in how to act with me. However, in my case they were already there. If they have been erased I doubt this work unless they were previously backed up to the card.

nothing is ever erased on digital magnetic media.
if the data was saved on the phone and it is not encrypted then you can recover it.
but running a recovery software on the phone might be the bottle neck.
you need to mount the device on your pc and have the recovery software look at it.
I think for $9 a month the phone company will send you transcripts of ALL texts for each phone on your plan,
